The assistant for night riding – Bike Light

For cyclists, can we refuse the charm of night riding? We cannot! Since we desire to ride at night, the bike light is necessary. In this article, let’s talk about the bike light.

Night riding

1. The classification of bike lights

(1) According to power generation type

The lights can be divided into self-generated and battery types, and the battery-powered type is more popular than the self-generated type. There are light-separated type and light-integrated types. The self-generated light mainly generates power by friction or the generator which built into the hub.

(2) According to placement

Lights are divided into headlight, front reflector, rear light, reflective footlight, and frame side light.

(3) According to the illuminant

Generally, the bike light illuminant includes a Tungsten lamp, HID, and LED light sources. The tungsten lamp is a common incandescent lamp which is made of tungsten filament. The HID lamp is a gas discharge bulb also called xenon lamp, it has high luminous efficiency and is the brightest bike light. The HID is suitable for cyclists who are mountain adventures and need strong lighting. The LED light converts electrical energy into light energy and is the most commonly used bike light.

2. Key purchase factors

(1) Brightness

Lumen is the international unit of luminous flux. It expresses the total amount of visible light emitted by a light source per unit of time. The higher the lumens, the greater the brightness. If you only consider the brightness, you can mainly focus on its lumens. If you need to ride at night in an urban environment, you need at least a 600lm headlight. If you are in a complex environment, you can choose a higher-lumen headlight, and the tail light can be from 20 to 60 lm. However, the higher lumens also mean higher dangers because the bright light may blur the vision of the pedestrians.

(2) Installation and functionality

Before purchasing, please pay attention to the installation convenience, whether it is easy to install, and whether the angle is easy to adjust. Regarding function, it is best to have three modes: high beam, low beam, and flashing, and the light can be switched according to different road conditions.

(3) Stability and water resistance

Waterproof light

It is inevitable to encounter special weather when riding outdoors so the waterproof type should be the best choice.

(4) Battery life and power display

Battery indicator

If your bike lights can display the battery life, it will prevent the lights from running out of power during riding. Lights with better battery life can allow us to ride further. If you often ride long distances, you need to pay more attention to the battery life.

(5) Side visibility

Bicycle taillights

When choosing lights, you also need to consider side visibility to make us easier to be noticed by surrounding vehicles at night. You can observe the brightness on both sides from 30, 60, and 90 degrees. A qualified taillight should have a wide and uniform light at all angles.

Thanks for watching.

Don’t hesitate to leave a message regarding the light if you have anything to share. We are looking forward to your idea and story.
