How to choose and adjust handlebars?

Classification of handlebar

To make our cycling trip easy and enjoyable, the handlebar is one of the important control parts of the bike. Let’s discuss how to select, install and debug the handlebar.

The handlebar is mainly composed of stems, grip trap, sometimes bar end is added according to actual needs. According to different models, handlebar also be divided into mountain bike road bike handlebars.

The length, the diameter of the tube and the height of the stem should be taken into consideration when choosing a mountain bike handlebar. The width of the handlebar is generally a fist length wider than that of rider’s shoulder. According to the ride habit, it can be adjusted appropriately.

The figure above and the table below illustrate the classification and characteristics of the mountain bike handlebar.

classification and characteristics of the mountain bike handlebars

Road bike handlebars mainly include straight handlebars, curved handlebars and ergonomic curved handlebars. Figure 2 describe s three types of road bike handlebars. Straight handlebar is commonly equipped in the entry-level road bike and off-road bike. It does not need high riding skills. Curved handlebar is specially designed for racing bike. It is suitable for advanced rider who with more riding skills. The lower part of the ergonomic curved handlebar has obvious bend. The reach and drop of it are average among the above three types. It can have better aerodynamics if the width of handlebar is the same or slightly wider than that of rider’s shoulder when choosing a curved handlebar. If we do not chase the extreme speed, it is more comfortable that use a curved handlebar with a small drop, because the riding posture does not need to change too much when switch the holding point.

Installation and adjustment of mountain bike handlebar

(1)Step 1
Pre-install the gear lever, brake lever and shock absorber remote control lever on the handlebar and then fasten screws. Adjust the installation angle after the handlebar is fixed.

(2)Step 2
Install the handlebar on the stem. The central scale should be in the middle of the stem when installs the handlebar. Fasten screws according to the order which illustrated in figure 3.

(3)Step 3
Install the grip strap. The material of it is sponge or plastic.
Firstly, wet the handlebar with water where the handlebar cover is installed. If we use a double-sided locking handlebar cover, loosen the locking screw at beginning, fasten it after installation. Finally install the handlebar plug.

(4)Step 4
Adjust the Angle and position of the brake lever, shift lever and absorber remote control lever. The initial brake lever position is set to 45° down horizontally. When we sit on the saddle and hold the handlebar, the position of the brake handle is just below the extension of the hand and the end of the finger just touches the brake lever. The angle and position of shift lever and shock absorbent wire lever can be adjusted based on personal habits.

Installation and adjustment of road bike handlebar

(1) Install the handlebars
Install curved handlebar centered on the stem. Curved handlebar angle should be to ensure that the upper of handlebar is level or slightly raised, and then cross fasten screws.

(2) Install the brake handle
First, install brake handle on the handlebar. The edge of the brake handle and the upper edge of the handle should be in a straight line or slightly raised, facing the front.

(3) Install the brake cable
Hold the brake and insert the inner cable into the brake cable hole, make sure the brake cable end is stuck in the groove, and then install the outer spool from the other end of the inner cable.

(4) Install the derailleur cable
Adjust the front and rear derailleur to the lowest gear and the highest speed gear respectively, insert the derailleur inner cable into the derailleur cable hole, make sure that the end of the derailleur cable is stuck in the slot, and install outer spool from the other end of the inner cable.

(5) Fix the cable pipes
Use tape to fix the brake and derailleur cable pipes. The cable pipes should be close to the handlebar and wrapped around them at least three circles.

(6) Wrap the grip strap
Wrap the grip strap clockwise from the lower end of the handle on the left side. In contrast, wrap it in the counterclockwise direction on the right side. Each turn should cover the previous one and a circle of 1 /3-1/2 is appropriate.

(7) Wrapping at the handle
It needs to be cross-wrapped, from the outside of the handle upwards, then through the lower end of the inside of the handle, and then from the inside of the handle upwards, ensuring that the direction of the strap is the same as the initial direction.

(8) End the strap
After wrapping the tape to the end, cut it in the direction of approximately 45°,finally use tape to stick.

(9) Final check
Insert the handlebar plug into the end of the bar and check for any slack.
